  • 12 weeks to Better Health: New Year Tune-up!
    with Navjit Kaur Sidhu

12-weeks to Better Health: New Year Tune-up!

Let's use the new year to tune-up the body, mind and spirit!

Drawing on the vast collection of yoga sets and meditations from Kundalini Yoga, we'll target each of the following systems of the body and improve their overall functioning and reset our way to better health.

    Skeletal System

    • Our bones are a living tissue and need stress applied to them in order to maintain bone density. Also, moving the joints in a gentle manner, helps to nourish the fluids of the joint capsule and maintain the ligaments and tendons.
    • How Kundalini Yoga helps? We'll do some weight bearing exercises to help your bones stay strong by encouraging osteoblastic (bone forming) activity. We'll also work to improve spinal flexibility.

    Nervous System

    • This is the hardwiring of your body, connecting your brain to all other parts of your body in order to communicate and coordinate the many functions of the body. Some of it is automatic, and some of it is within your control.
    • How Kundalini Yoga helps? How you handle and bounce back from stress is the tone of your "fight or flight" sympathetic nervous system and the "rest and digest" parasympathetic nervous system. We will do poses and breath-work that awakens the nervous system network and make it respond with agility to stress and then switch gears back to a relaxation response.

    Muscular System

    • With over 600 skeletal muscles in the body, their role is to provide movement through contraction. Muscles work in pairs to provide mobility, posture, balance and strength.
    • How Kundalini Yoga helps? We will work on a balanced exchange of contraction and relaxing major muscle groups of the body which can develop muscular balance throughout the body and great for your back!

    Circulatory System

    • Your heart is your strongest muscle and works tirelessly 24/7 for your whole life, pumping blood throughout your body, carrying nutrients and wastes to and from the cells.
    • How Kundalini Yoga helps? We will strengthen the heart muscles and increase it's efficiency by reversing stress-induced high blood pressure which has its source in mental, emotional or physcial over-stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system.

    Respiratory System

    • Oxygen, it's the currency of the body! Every cell craves it, you need it to stay alive but how often do you think about breathing?
    • How Kundalini Yoga helps? We will use poses and breath-work to increase the capacity of the lungs to bring in more oxygen, and learn various breathing techniques to help detoxify the lungs and release diaphragm tension which inhibits proper breathing.

    Digestive System

    • Are you what you eat or what you absorb or what toxins continue to circulate within you? The digestive system has three major functions: 1) to absorb and digest foods, 2) to secrete digestive juices and 3) to move food through the body from beginning to end.
    • How Kundalini Yoga helps? We'll use poses, movement and breath-work to apply pressure to the areas of digestion and elimination, in order to speed up a sluggish metabolism, increase gastric juices and digestive enzymes along with facilitating the function of the gall bladder and liver.

    Reproductive System

    • Sexual vitality and reproductive health is the zest of life! It is our creative power and necessary to ensure the survival of our species. However, many women experience monthly discomfort and a hormonal/emotional roller coaster ride during menses, pregnancy, peri-menopause and post-menopause. Men can experience their own issues related to prostate health in their later years.
    • How Kundalini Yoga helps? We will practice a series of poses and meditations that can be used to relax tension around the ovaries, balance hormones, understand our moon cycle and channel sexual energy into vitality and creative flow.

    Endocrine System

    • The eight glands in the body are controlled by the autonomic nervous system to secrete hormones when the body needs them. They are the chemical messengers of the body and considered in Kundalini yoga to be the guardians of your health!
    • How does Kundalini Yoga help? The location of the glands correspond to the chakras in the body, and so we will do a series for each chakra which in turn will support the functioning of each gland in the body. Breath-work, eye focus and sound have a positive effect on the pituitary and pineal glands, considered to be the core control center of the neuro-endocrine systems.

Integumentary System (Skin, Hair & Nails)

    • Skin is our largest organ and protects us from the elements. It has a number of functions, including sensation, temperature regulation, making vitamin D, and protecting the body's internal tissues. The skin's radiance and the hair's luster reveal aspects of health and lifestyle, such as diet.
    • How does Kundalini Yoga help? Considered to be the third lung, it breathes in whatever it is that we put onto the skin, and also releases toxins from the body. Stress and anger affect the skin, we will do poses and breathwork to help remove the effects of long-term anger and stress by adjusting metabolism and helping the body to detox through sweat!

    Lymphatic/Immune System

    • The lymphatic system is an extensive drainage network of vessels, ducts and lymph nodes that runs in parallel with the circulation system. It has important roles in maintaining tissue fluid balance, dietary fat absorption and the functioning of the immune system. The immune system is the body's defense mechanism against external and internal threats.
    • How Kundalini Yoga helps? Unlike the blood, the lymph fluid does not have a pump like the heart to move it, so it relies on you moving the body. We will do yoga postures, breath work and meditation to stimulate lymph flow into those areas of the body that have higher concentration of lymph nodes such as the neck, breast tissue, armpits, groin and inner thighs and also help to boost the immune system.

    Urinary System

    • The urinary system keeps the body's fluid and chemical composition in balance and detoxifies the blood. The kidneys control fluid balance, filter the blood by removing waste products and toxins, and regulate blood pH, or acidity.
    • How Kundalini Yoga helps? The kidneys sit right under the diaphragm so we will do yoga poses that improve flexibility in the spine and diapraghm to open up circulation and nerve impulses to the kidneys. We will also address issues around stress and fear as they relate to this organ.

Each week, you'll learn a whole lot about your beautiful and complex body. We will do specific yoga poses, breathwork and meditations to help support the function of each major system in the body and awaken your body's own healing capacities!
